Notes from Texas
1) Firstly, I didn’t realize that it snowed in Texas, or was even really that cold!
2) Secondly, I didn’t see anyone wearing cowboy boots or cowboy hats! I realize that I am the one that really hates stereotypes, but I mean, it is Texas!! Granted I was only at the airport, hotel, and a conference filled mostly with geeks, but just sayin’...
3) Thirdly, the restroom signs at the airport said “Toilets”, is it just me, or is that a bit strange??
4) People are super friendly, or I don’t know if they were just so scared of the “moslem” person that they felt obligated to smile and nod when I looked at them! Ok, that was a joke, I had a great time, and everyone was really nice.
5) Surely I put on like 5lbs from my white chocolate mocha addiction, courtesy of Starbucks, of course, which was tremendously hard to resist as the Starbucks people put their coffee shops like 10 steps away from everything… and there are no Timmy’s in Texas!
6) There was no shortage of internet celebrities!
7) Wendy was exactly like she seems in her writing, very sincere, smart, and friendly, I loved how she spoke with the same passion and care that is evident on her blog.
8) I met the wonderful, KABOOM (which is non-profit organization with an amazing mission) employee, Nicole, who carries her camera in a sock, loves guitar hero (which I totally suck at, by the way) and was proud to have the only hijabi as her friend (we both agree that I should have gotten a prize or something! Actually I don’t know if I was in fact the only hijabi out of the few thousand people that were there, but we didn’t see any others).
9) The airport people in Austin are very funny, well, at least I like to think of them like that…
10) And finally, since I gave out my cards to a LOT of people… Hi!! ![]()
