Oh Canada!

It was Canada Day yesterday, and while we didn’t do anything particularly exciting or patriotic, we had a pretty good day at the park. I actually felt good… for the first time in like 2 weeks!!!

We played Cricket, as it’s probably becoming Toronto’s national sport! Ok, I kid, but I cannot tell you the number of times that I’ve driven by Cricket matches in the past 2 summers! Of course, soccer is insanely popular too – I tried to get my kids into soccer and it was completely filled up! Anyway, I love to play Cricket, have I ever mentioned this? Yes, I do, and so does my mom, who is surprisingly good for a 50-year-old woman, but of course we were playing with the kid’s bat as well since we don’t actually own an adult bat, but you know, it’s all good!

My dad and I used to play cricket a lot when I was little. He’d stand me in the garage with a bat, and then he’d bowl tennis balls at me. I guess he missed not having a son to share his cricketing passion with!

We stopped playing when I entered secondary school, cos he got too busy with the new business.

The funny thing was that I sucked at most sports at school, but in year 9 (I was 13 or 14), the girls got to play a term of cricket. I was one of only two girls in my year who could actually hit the ball! For once, I did not suck! And on top of that, I was actually better than the usual ‘sporty’ girls. Yey! Thanks dad. {grin}

Shame we only got to play for a term though… they were my 15 mins of sporty fame, haha.

Specs - yeah i know. actually it’s prolly the same in the west indies too. did you know that canada has a cricket team? yeah. and i think they’re in the guinness book of world records for the lowest score ever! hahah

iMuslim - i like that your dad played cricket with you, that’s sweet. my dad was pretty obsessed with cricket, except he played like almost every nite with my uncles etc, so i don’t think that i ever played with him, or as a child for that matter. i used to live with me cousins for a bit when i was in trinidad (i was 18) and he made me play cricket with him a lot because there was no one else in the house, and that’s when i started to like it - altho, i really only like to bat!
