My 3 hour long, butt numbing, movie watching experience

So last night I went with my almost-desi* friend to see a Hindi movie, Yuvraaj, I think this is only the second time that I’ve gone to a theatre to see a Hindi movie, and I think the first time I fell asleep. I was deeply concerned about the 3 hour movie-watching time that this undertaking involved. But, she insisted. Actually, she insisted we see Dostana, but it was sold out by the time we got there.

I said, well let’s go eat, and she said, no, there is something called “Yuvraaj”, let’s see that, I am in the mood for a Hindi film, and I said, dude, this better not be like a horror movie with a weird name, cuz then I’ll have to kill you! (oh, the irony of that statement) Anyway, she said, no, no, it’s a Hindi movie, come on, how bad can it be?

The highlight of my evening was that my belt fell off, I tied it too tight on my hip, which apparently cut of my circulation a bit, then caused me pain and not being able to walk due to my butt falling asleep while sitting in a chair for 3 hours! Well, ok, not really a “highlight”, but it happened and I was in pain for like an hour after, so I thought it should be mentioned first!

The movie started and the over-acting was incredible, we seriously wished that we could understand the language of the guys behind us because they sounded funny – we laughed anyways! The cheeziness was sometimes mystifying. We wondered out loud about the stupidity of the storyline. I made jokes. She gave me looks and then laughed. It was fun. The second half was good though, and when it was over, after 3 hours had elapsed and my butt was fast asleep, she turned to me and said “Shazia! You liked that movie!”, and then I had to admit “Yeah, it was alright”.

I really liked one song (minus the weird cats), and it’s now on my iPod, did I just admit that?

*almost-desi – born in India, can put on an “Indian speaking English” accent, cooks food that could “blow you away” with Indian spices, but that’s about it.

Thoughts from Aruna

haha….yeah i think you need to do some preparatory exercises before the next one girl!!!

Thoughts from Nowal

haha, you’re hilarious Shaz!! I must say though that hindi movies fall short everytime nowadays. The last good one I watched was chak de india…or taare zameen par - whichever came later. that’s abt it.
btw, you’ll LOVE the new twilight movie. i know you will. give it a try for sure!

Thoughts from iMuslim

You understand Hindi, Shaz? Much respek, if so!

I need subtitles, and I too am almost Desi*.

* Except, I can’t cook, can’t speak the language, and was born in England. I think “barely Desi” is a more apt description!

Thoughts from shaz

aruna - which next one? wink

Nowal - sometimes i will watch like 4 at once, but on dvd and i forward thru a lot of it, and then i dont watch any for like a year. they are ok tho, i don’t mind them, but i have not seem a really good one in a loooong time.

iMuslim - ok, no. neither my almost desi friend nor i understand hindi, we too depend on subtitles!
“barely desi” hahahah, i like that!

Thoughts from Haleem

Actually Dostana is pretty good…. I have seen trailers of Yuvraaj but wasn’t contemplating seeing it until your review! If YOU can like it, well….

Thoughts from shaz

ok dude, no… i didn’t say you should go to the theatre, risk butt-numbing, and pay $10 to see it. i thought of it as a comedy!

Thoughts from Haleem

I actually watched Yuvraaj last night (rented it - yep, it’s already out, DVD quality print, in those Indian stores).

Not bad, I would rate it 3.5/5.

PS. there is a character in the movie called Shazia, and she’s a vamp. Hehe ... tongue laugh

Thoughts from sf

Am going to check it out on youtube! smile)

Thoughts from shaz

Haleem, yeah i noticed! amm, what is a vamp exactly?

Watched it on youtube. liked the music but not the movie. I liked the first song(salman) and my fav had to be the one that katrina sang, forgot the name, lol. It was kinda slow, very beautiful. Now am going to check out Dostana on youtube. LOL
