Lego, a great toy for dads, err, kids…

Yesterday, the last day of spring break here in Ontario, my husband decided that he now needed to start a ‘project’ with the kids! So off we went to Toys”R”Us with all 3 of them…
My husband and his 2 boys spent half hour in the lego section while the baby and I browsed the rest of the store. I bought some lovely and inexpensive kiddy watering cans, in preparation for summer of course, you know… if you buy it, it will come… and all that.
My dear husband thought that it would be great fun to build something, like this Ferrari F430 Challenge
with his 2 and 4 year olds! Clearly, he thought that the 670 tiny pieces would not be an issue!
Being the sensible and practical parent, I proceeded to discourage this purchase, but of course the 4 year old started crying in the middle of the store! In ‘brilliant mother’ mode, I convinced him that this lovely $9.99 model
can ‘crash and everything’! And it’s blue! Wow! Just make it sound more exciting and hard to resist, and the kid will surely be convinced!
We left with 2 happy boys, 2 crashing racer Lego sets,
a contented baby, a smarter dad, and a smug mom!
Last night and this morning, my husband and the boys spent their time building their Legos, it was great bonding for them. I know that the recommended ages for the toys were 7 to 12, but they really had a great time doing it with their father, and he with them, especially since he loves Legos and cars! (pictures here)
I think that the trick to spending enjoyable, quality time together is finding an activity that both parent and kid enjoys. My kids just happen to be turning into the ‘stereotyped’ boys… loving cars, trucks, and anything with an engine… I wonder what it would be like if we had a girl?

I could really appreciate your comments…dads and kids love Lego kits with lots of pieces…the more the merrier! We’ve discovered Toobeez whose pieces are so large that they can’t get lost, my 2 year old can’t eat them and my son and husband can build some neat, large things like forts and houses. It’s the first building toy we’ve found that everyone in the house can play with at the same time.

Great building toys Coolmommy2X, thanks!!
My house is pretty small, so I don’t think that we could handle that, but I imagine it would be great fun in an empty basement!!

oh my gosh! I am laughing so hard! of course the Ferrari! LOL! Your boys look like they had a blast!
a girl? is that a seed planting itself?
That would be just the sort of thing I’d do! I bought him half a shop of Brio railway track at the age of one. Well, I had a great time building incomprehensibly huge layouts and he did enjoy push a train around them!
At three, I’m afraid Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a popular father and son bonding activity. On the other hand, he does enjoy sharing a sheet of paper and directing combined drawing activities.

welcome (un)relaxeddad! Hmmm, seems dads are like that… I think it’s the always a boy thing! we actually just watched harry potter 2 nights ago for the first time… you watch it with your 3 year old??? ummm, I was kinda scared.
