Do you also hate ignorance?

read more about: life in canada. being muslim.

I was on the subway today and a man rushed by me and said “get the f*ck out of here taliban”, and to be honest, it took me a few minutes to actually register what he said and then I pondered it for a few minutes and then forgot about it until now, so I am going to conclude that it didn’t really bother me too much.

The reason that I am sharing this with you is because it reminded me why I love living in this country – you see, the last time that someone directed an ignorant, racist remark at me was about 11 years ago, pre-911 and pre-headscarf, so back then I was just Indian aka “brown”! I feel quite fortunate that I can live in a country as open to culture and diversity as Canada is, and I really want to say that though I tend to take a lot of things about living here for granted, and I really dislike winter, and this spring was totally disappointing, Canada rocks people!

In other news – ignorance! People, ignorance sucks! And it helps none of us! iMuslim is doing her part! I gotta find myself one…

jazakallah for the plug babe!

Re: ignorant fool. I am so glad that he didn’t get to you. It would’ve totally shocked me! Like the time a lady kicked me in the calf (whilst I had my back turned, reading a map - how courageous!) cos I ACCIDENTILY tapped her foot a few seconds before. It had nothing to do with my being Muslim, (well she didn’t make any rude remarks in that sense) but the incident really got under my skin cos sane adults aren’t supposed to behave that way!

Alhamdulillah, other than that blip my experience in London has been a great one, both before & after hijab. smile

What a JERK!! I wish I could slap him in the face and tell him to shut the...oops shouldn’t say that. But, I am glad that you are that strong to be able to put it past you. Props!!

Thoughts from Jenny

wow… that guy really had issues… props to you for not letting it get to you!  He was such a hiney hole.  Anyways, I’m just glad that you handled it well!

Thoughts from Aruna

Wow....huh...it takes all kinds doesn’t it?? We are so advanced as a civilization in so many ways and one small incident like this can shed light on how primitive and ignorant some people still are!!! Then again, in parts of the world people are killing other people for their differences....such a shame that hate spreads so much more easily than love.

Thoughts from Jenny, Bloggess

What the hell?!  I can’t believe that anyone would actually say something like that to someone else.

Makes me lose a little faith in people…

Thoughts from Cakes

That sucks.
Kind of reminds me of when I didn’t have any money on me for someone begging and she yelled at me, “Cracker!” I was so startled that I giggled.

Thoughts from crunchy carpets

Sigh...you gotta wonder..like the whole Rachel Ray thing...because her ‘scarf’ looked too middle eastern!

WT Heck!!??

New design is awesome!

Thoughts from pamela

Thats is awful and more than ignorant. People can be so pathetic.

Thoughts from Khadija

yeah sucks for sure!

Glad you didn’t really let it get to you. I agree too, Spring sucks this year. I am pretty sick of the rain and need some SUN!!

assalaamu alaikum

Thoughts from shaz

thanks guys! racism and ignorance does totally suck, but it also is quite prevalent, and I think the worse thing that we can do is react to these stupid comments, so I’ve chosen to instead turn my disgust for it into more positive actions than anger. thanks for your words everyone smile
