Confirmation that I am, in fact, an island girl
On the first morning I was here, I woke up with the millions of singing birds and stood outside until the sun got really bright and really hot and my cousin (who lives here) started complaining that it was waaaay too hot, but I enjoyed every moment of that heat!!
This is my first trip back to Trinidad in 9 years, and it’s the first time my kids are here. It’s a tremendously difficult trip for many reasons. Every day I run the emotional gamut I think. From sharing my cousin’s grief over the loss of her daughter, to watching my grandmother’s worry and disappointment when I told her about the divorce, to unexpectedly being able to see my dad again after a year and then having to say bye when he left.
But besides the emotional rollercoaster, it’s amazing to me that I feel such a strong sense of belonging and contentment and peace here, you know, like home. ![]()
